Yemaya

2nd Week of Summer, Goddess of the week

This article is part of the Goddesses for Every Season Journey I have decided to take and I am following the book Goddesses for Every Season by Nancy Blair. A year long Journey to meet a different Goddess a week.

Artist Sandra Stanton

Yemaya is an African Goddess and is the Goddess of the Ocean, the womb of creation. She is the Mother of all and is considered this as she is the ruler of all water and all life is thought to have began in the sea, therefore began with Yemaya. She governs the Moon, all female cycles and childbirth. Ruling over the surface of the sea where life is concentrated, Orisha Olokin rules the depths, the unconcious and together they form balance.

She is motherly, protective of her children and caring. Comforting you just like a mother and is always there for you whenever you need her. So very loving and nurturing she will help you let go and cleanse you of anything that troubles you. Letting the healing waters engulf you, cleansing and clearing you, healing you. Letting emotions run free, releasing blocks.

Meditation to connect with Yemaya

Find a quiet place, light a candle and maybe put on some incense/oil diffuser. Sit, close your eyes and relax. Take three deep breaths. Set your intention to meet and connect with Yemaya. Say in your mind ‘My intention is to connect with Yemaya.’ Say this three times.

Artist Katherine Skaggs

Imagine you are on an Island, surrounded by the Ocean. The sky is clear and blue, the sun shining and there is a wonderful cool sea breeze. Sitting on the beach, by the water you relax and enjoy the view and the way the Ocean makes you feel. You play in the water, you watch the small creatures and are amazed at how much life there really is in the Sea.

After some time, you notice there is a little boat just down from you. You decide that you would like to take a little trip in it out to Sea. Getting in the boat, you let the current take you out. Bobbing along, you go quite a distance and the Ocean surrounds you. You are not scared but feel at ease and peaceful.

Suddenly you feel the energy change. It feels so wonderful, loving and comforting. Looking around, you see a great big woman hovering over the Sea. It is Yemaya. She looks at you and smiles. ‘I am Yemaya, Mother of all. I am so glad you have connected with me. Come child, let me show you who I am.’ She takes you in her big hands and carries you into the Sea.

Where does she take you? Take this time to connect with her, ask your questions, listen to her and observe what she shows you.

After a little while and once you have finished connecting, thank Yemaya for her insights and gifts she has shown you.

When you are ready and you say your goodbyes, take three deep breaths and come back to the room.

Write down your experience. Where did Yemaya take you? What did you talk about? Did she have a message for you or a gift? What other things did you notice in your mediation?

My Journey with Yemaya

Normally I use my drum to journey to the meet the Goddesses, however when I tried this time I just couldn’t connect. It just didn’t feel right. I drummed a little, making sounds and rhythms, letting the drum/spirit guide me. I then decided or felt I should chant Yemaya’s name. So I started chanting it and singing it. I did this for quite a while. After some time I felt the energy change. It was such a loving and caring energy and I saw an image of a woman hovering (sitting) over the Ocean. She was swirling the water around. I then heard her talk to me. She told me she gives life, she is the cosmic womb, the life blood that flows through our veins and the waters that run through the Earth. She told me I was strong and I can do anything. I do not need anyone else, she can help me. She will help me give birth and I should let go of all worries. Let my emotions flow and let go. She then used a rattle and I could hear its beautiful hypnotic sound. It was healing, loving. I could feel the healing waters and had a sense of peace.

Yemaya by Laura James

This was an amazing journey for me. It started off quite hard as I just couldn’t get the connection. At one point I thought, I’ll try this later, maybe I’ll get a better connection then, but I kept trying. I loved the chanting, it flowed with her name. I loved how I connected this time as it was different than other times. I may not have seen much but I could feel and hear her message, her energy, her love. She felt so right to me and this Goddess so far is my favorite. I will definitely be connecting more, collecting some items to honor her and connect with. My words can not do justice to my connection with her, but it was wonderful. I never knew anything about her. A couple of weeks ago I did see her name pop up and thought, oh I want to see who that is, then forgot. But then she was this weeks connection. I did not research her before I connected and now I have there is so much that I picked up on that she is. Maybe I am more attracted to her as she is a Mother, loving, helps women with birth and is a patron to pregnant woman, but I do not know. All I know is she felt so right for me and I can see this has started a beautiful relationship with her.
