The Chakra System: A Beginners Guide

The word Chakra comes from the Sanskrit word Cakra, meaning wheel/disk. They are spinning disks of energy and correspond to different nerves, organs and areas of your energeticChakras for beginners body, which in turn affect your emotional and physical well being.

The Chakra system is an ancient energy system that originated in India and was first mentioned in the Vedas dating from 1500 to 1000 BC. This system holds your energy and helps it to flow throughout and around you. It contains the life force energy, which is what keeps us healthy, energized and alive. There are many Chakras and energy points in and around the body, but for now I will just talk about the 7 main ones which align with the spine.

What are the 7 Chakras?

Base/Root Chakra (Muladhara)

The first Chakra is located at the base of your spine/pelvic floor area and first three vertebrae. This one is about our basic needs, our securities and survival. When this is open and flowing freely, we feel safe and fearless.

The base/root Chakra is also where we ground ourselves from. To connect to all the other Chakras and to above it is important to be grounded. This will help the connection to them all to be much stronger and will help you remember any messages that you may get when connecting to above.

If you are experiencing anxiety, insecurity, nightmares or fears then you may have a blocked or unbalanced base/root Chakra.

Sacral Chakra (Svadhisthana)

The second Chakra is located just below the navel area. This one is all about creativity and sexual energy. When this is open and flowing freely, we feel vibrant, abundant and joyful.

This is the Chakra that helps us take risks and the leap of faith. It helps us to create our ideas and projects and hobbies. It helps us to be playful like a child and find the joy in all things.

If you are experiencing depression, fear of change or emotional instability then your Sacral Chakra may be blocked or unbalanced.

Solar Plexus (Manipura)

The third Chakra is located just below the joint of the rib cage. This one is all about emotions and our personal power. When this is open and flowing free, we feel happy and empowered.

This Chakra helps you feel your self power, be motivated and to realize your dreams.

If you feel angry, loss of control or self, self conscious or have difficulty making decisions, you have have a blocked or unbalanced Solar Plexus.

Heart Chakra (Anahata)

The fourth Chakra is located at the center of the chest. This one is all about love and connection. It is also the middle Chakra of the 7, which unite the physical with the spiritual. When this is open and flowing free, we feel connected and can feel the power of unconditional love that is within us and around us. Love for ourselves as well as others. Acceptance and forgiveness come easily.

If you are experiencing grief, fear, hatred, jealousy and betrayal then you could have an unbalanced/blocked Heart Chakra.

Throat Chakra (Vishuddha)

The fifth Chakra is located at the throat. This one is all about communication and speaking our higher truth. When this is open and free flowing, we can easily communicate and express ourselves and be who we really are. We become our authentic selves and stand in our power.

If you fear what others may think of you or how they judge you and not say something you think they may want you to say, then you may have a blocked/unbalanced Throat Chakra.

Third Eye (Ajna)

The sixth Charka is located between the eyebrows. This one is all about intuition. When this is open and free we feel/hear our intuition and know to follow it. Opening up to our inner guidance and wisdom.

If you feel stuck and very indecisive or are too much in your head overthinking and unable to ‘hear’ your inner guidance, then you may have an unbalanced/blocked Third Eye Chakra.

Crown  (Sahasrara)

The seventh Chakra is located at the top of the head. This Chakra is all about spiritual connection and enlightenment. When this is open and free we feel connected, can communicate easily to our higher selves, guides and the divine. We are more compassionate, love unconditionally, more forgiving, joyful and just know who we are and who the divine is.

How to get started with balancing your Chakras

Now you know what the Chakras are, you can now start to work on feeling them as well as clearing and balancing them. There are many ways to do this such as visualization, meditation and mantras to name a few. Below are a couple exercises you can try to help you, first feel them and where they are in your body and how they feel and then a meditation to balance them.

Feeling your Chakras

Lay or sit in a comfortable position. Close your eyes and take three deep breaths and relax.

Starting with the root chakra, focus your attention at the base of your spine and pelvic floor area. You can place your hands on this area too if you like.

Now just sit and feel/sense/imagine your root chakra. What does it feel like? What color is it? How big is it? Is it spinning and if so which way? Make a mental note.

When you are finished with the root chakra, focus your attention on your sacral chakra just below your belly button. Do the same as you did before. Feel/sense/imagine your chakra here etc.

Continue upwards and feel each chakra as explained above.

Solar plexus – just under the middle of the rib cage.

Heart – middle of chest

Throat

Third eye – in between eye brows

Crown – top of head

Once you have finished each chakra, write down what you feel and your experience of them. This may take practice before you can feel them or sense them etc. But the more you practice the more you will feel them and then know if they are balanced etc.

Chakra Clearing Meditation

Find a comfortable position and close your eyes. Take three deep breaths and relax.

Focus your attention on the root chakra at the base of your spine. Imagine/sense/feel a big root growing down from this, through your legs and feet and into the ground. Growing deeper and deeper into the earth until it reaches the center and wraps around a huge crystal.

Feel the energy from this crystal go up the root and up into your feet and legs into your root chakra. Grounding you to mother earth. Feel that you are rooted.

Now that you are grounded, imagine/sense/feel more energy from the center of the earth coming up the root and into your root chakra to clear and cleanse it. See this energy circling/swirling around your chakra clearing it of all negativity and unblocking it. Helping it to shine bright and clear. See the bright red of the chakra and feel your energy change here.

Once you have finished clearing this chakra, focus your attention on your sacral chakra (just below your navel) and draw the energy up from your root into this chakra clearing and cleansing it as you did the root. Feel it being cleared of all negativity, making it shine bright orange.

Once you have finished with this draw the energy up to the solar plexus and all the other chakras in turn as you did the root and sacral.

Solar plexus – just under the middle of the rib cage (Yellow)

Heart – middle of chest (Green)

Throat (Blue)

Third eye – in between eye brows (Indigo)

Crown – top of head (White)

Once you have finished the crown chakra, see the energy spurt out the top of your head and tumble around you. Clearing and cleansing your aura.

Then imagine/sense/feel a bright healing light from above you. Shining down through your crown chakra, through your body and other chakras, down through your root into the center of the earth. Clearing each chakra along the way. Helping you connect from above to below and vice versa.

When you are ready, take three deep breaths and open your eyes. Write down your experience.

Do you feel a change of energy?

This may take some practice to really sense your chakras, but know by doing this meditation you are indeed clearing them. There may be some things that require a bit more than just this meditation, especially if you have been really blocked by a past event/life or limited belief and there would be other ways or things you would need to really clear that energy from you.

The seven main chakras are considered important because they provide a framework for understanding and exploring the complex interplay between the physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual aspects of human existence, ultimately facilitating holistic well-being and personal growth. The Chakra system has much more to it than just these seven main energy centers and there are many other ways to feel and clear your Chakras, but as this is a beginners guide I will leave it here.
