Primal Mother & Child

Primal Mother & Child
Mother Goddess sculpture from Madhya Pradesh or Rajasthan, India, 6th-7th century, in the National Museum of Korea, Seoul. From Wikipedia.

The Primal Mother is the Mother of all. The creator, the nurturer, the wild woman, the divine feminine. She was here before time existed, ancient and wise, loving and kind, wild and free. She is a fierce protector of her children, nurturing them, caring for them and protecting them from harm. She is the very essence of a Mother, she is inside all of us waiting for us to let her out, waiting for us to connect to her again. For we have forgotten who she is. We have forgotten our wild sides and have been tamed. We have forgotten we are her wild children. We are the primal child. We have forgotten the divine feminine, the true essence of a woman and all she is and can be.

Fortunately the divine feminine is rising again. We are starting to remember who she is, who the Great Mother is, who the wild woman is and all female qualities. The Primal Mother is being remembered and she will continue to be more and more. As we connect within, we find her there. We find the untamed, the wild in us and if we let ourselves let go, we will free the wild one. We will be free once more. Connected to the loving Mother and all that is. Connected, whole and happy.

The Primal Mother is the divine feminine and is known by many names. There is a poem written by Doreen Valientine called The Charge of the Goddess. The Charge is a promise from the Goddess to her followers that she will teach them and guide them. That she will look after them when they need her the most. Although the Charge has been around since at least the early nineteenth century, its probably been around longer. Adapting through the years and Doreen Valientine is one version and the most known. Here it is below with some alterations to update in modern language. You can find the original at Doreen Valiente Foundation.

The Charge of the Goddess

Listen to the words of the Great Mother, who was of old also called Artemis; Astarte; Diana; Melusine; Aphrodite; Cerridwen; Dana; Arianrhod; Isis; Bride; and by many other names.

Whenever you have need of anything, once in a month, and better it be when the Moon be full, then you shall assemble in some secret place and adore the spirit of me, who am Queen of all Witcheries.

There shall you assemble, you who are fain to learn all sorcery, yet have not yet won its deepest secrets: to these will I teach things that are yet unknown.

And you shall be free from slavery; and as a sign that you are really free, you shall be naked in your rites; and you shall dance, sing, feast, make music and love, all in my praise.

For mine is the ecstasy of the spirit and mine also is joy on earth; for my Law is Love unto all Beings.

Keep pure your highest ideal; strive ever toward it; let nothing stop you or turn you aside.

For mine is the secret door which opens upon the Land of Youth; and mine is the Cup of the Wine of Life, and the Cauldron of Cerridwen, which is the Holy Grail of Immortality.

I am the Gracious Goddess, who gives the gift of joy to the heart. Upon earth, I give the knowledge of the spirit eternal; and beyond death, I give peace, and freedom, and reunion with those who have gone before. Nor do I demand sacrifice, for behold I am the Mother of All Living, and my love is poured out upon the earth.

Hear the words of the Star Goddess, she in the dust of whose feet are the hosts of heaven; whose body encircles the Universe; I, who am the beauty of the green earth, and the white Moon among the stars, and the mystery of the waters, and the heart’s desire, call to your soul. Arise and come to me.

For I am the Soul of Nature, who gives life to the universe; from me all things proceed, and to me must all things return; and before my face, beloved of gods and mortals, your inner most divine self shall be unfolded in the rapture of infinite joy.

Let my worship be within the heart that rejoices, for behold: all acts of love and pleasure are my rituals. And therefore let there be beauty and strength, power and compassion, honour and humility, mirth and reverence within you.

And you who think to seek for me, know your seeking and yearning shall avail you not, unless you know this mystery: that if that which you seek you find not within you, you will never find it without you.

For behold, I have been with you from the beginning; and I am that which is attained at the end of desire.

Meditation to connect with the Primal Mother
Gaia by Josephine Wall

Meditation to connect with the Primal Mother

Get comfortable and light some incense, maybe a candle and close your eyes.  Take three deep breaths and relax. Hold your intention in connecting to the Primal Mother. You could say this in your head three times, ‘My intention is to connect with the Primal Mother.’

Imagine you are in a forest and in front of you is a cave. You know if you enter you will meet the Primal Mother, so you enter the cave. It is dark and cool but there is a little light coming from somewhere which helps you notice another doorway with stairs going down. You go down the stairs. Deeper and deeper into the earth you go. Down and down, deeper and deeper. You have been going down for a while and you suddenly come to a small round room. There is a fire in the middle and you decide to go closer. A voice suddenly says ‘Welcome Dear Child.’ You look around but can’t see where the voice is coming from. The voice says ‘I am the Mother of all and you are my child. I am the divine, the wild woman, the untamed. I am your Mother and I love you deeply. You are my wild child and I want you to be free.’ She then appears before you, walks up to you and hugs you as a loving Mother would. Take this time to talk to her and get to know her.

Once you have finished your conversation she gives you a gift, hugs you again and disappears. You thank her and you know you can connect to her any time.

When you are ready, take three deep breaths and come back to the room.

Write down your experience. What was the Primal Mother like? What message did she have for you? Did she answer your questions? What did she look like? What was the gift she gave you?

How to connect with the Primal Mother

Here are a few ways you can connect with the Primal Mother.

Meditation

Use the meditation above or find one you are drawn to. You can also simply sit, close your eyes, relax and ask the Primal Mother to connect with you. Feel and sense her with you and see if she has a message.

Sit in Nature

Find a quiet spot in nature where you can sit or lay down and connect with her. Looking up at the sky either in the day or at night. Look at the clouds, the stars and just be.

Inner Child work

You may find some inner child work helps in your connection with the Primal Mother. You can find some meditations online or there are books on the subject. Nurturing your inner child will not only help you and your journey but will help you feel safe and loved by the Great Mother, knowing you are apart of her as she is apart of you.

How Primal Mother will help you

Primal Mother is the Great Mother and she will love you and look after you as a Mother, for you are her child. She will help you find the real you. The untamed wild you. The one who is deep down inside of you, waiting to be released. Call on her when you feel the call of the old ways. Call on her when you are stuck, when you feel alone, when you doubt yourself and she will help you release the true you, helping you to be free and finally come home and be the wild child you really are.
